To date, there is still no consensus among ophthalmologists about the therapeutic and diagnostic approach in retinal vessel occlusion. The current course provides an overview of the clinical features and pathomechanisms of retinal vein and retinal artery occlusion and outlines relevant investigations. Furthermore, current therapeutic approaches in patients with retinal vessel occlusion such as hemodilution, thrombolysis or the use of anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs are reviewed to determine whether these treatments are likely to improve major clinical outcomes. In addition, we report on various surgical treatment options including adventitial sheathotomy, radial optic neurotomy or the cannulation of retinal vessels.
